I also co-wrote the prize-winning autobiography of the distinguished physicist John Wheeler (Norton). I’m Melissa Stevens, and I’m the founder of Purple Ninja Editorial. I gave up my corporate heels for a laptop and purple converse about ten years ago and never looked back. I’m passionate about editing, writing, and design.

I have 18 years of experience in proofreading and copyediting, much of it in educational publishing. In that field, I’ve worked on language arts, social studies, science, and math, mostly for elementary grades. These projects have involved many kinds of activities, from new manuscripts and revisions for textbooks and ancillaries to checking state standards.

I offer a variety of editorial services: editorial assessment, developmental editing, copy-editing and proofreading. No matter what stage your manuscript is at, I can help. If you’ve just finished it (well done!), I can take a look to advise you how much more editorial work is required. If you’ve been through a round or two of rewrites, perhaps a developmental edit is needed? I look at plot, structure, characterisation, narrative pace, sense of place, as well as other aspects. What works, what doesn’t and – most importantly – how to fix it. A copy-edit will pick up typos, bad grammar and punctuation and iron out inconsistencies. A proofread will give it that final professional polish – whether you’re going to self-publish or submit via the traditional publishing route.
