Rachel Oestreich is a freelance editor and writing coach who works with independent authors of speculative fiction, small presses, and publishers like Orbit/Redhook, Sourcebooks, and Haymarket Books. She also holds an MFA in fiction writing and serves as an adjunct English instructor at her local university and community college, teaching courses on rhetoric, composition, creative writing, and fairy tales. When not working, she writes, reads, crochets, drinks tea, and manages her two cats and a basset hound named Grimm.

My name is David, and I’m happy that you’ve found me here. Grammar and punctuation has been a passion of mine for some time. My work as an editor began more than twenty years ago when I noticed that many of my college classmates needed help to tidy up their writing assignments. In the years since, I’ve worked with authors just like you who are looking to add that professional last touch to their essay, short story, website copy, blog post, novel, and more.

Since 2001 I’ve worked as an editor for trade papers, magazines, not-for profit organizations, literary magazines, and with private clients. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and recently completed the Professional Editing Certificate program through the University of Chicago Graham School. I’ve spent many volunteer hours reading and critiquing flash, short stories, and novels. I offer professional, honest feedback and would love to work with clients who are serious about taking their writing to the next level.

I believe in the power of story, and I’m as passionate about helping others craft their narratives as I am about creating my own. I specialize in development and line editing, and I work with authors of upmarket fiction, memoir, and books about personal growth. I also offer manuscript assessments, editorial assistance with queries, synopses, and book proposals, and one-on-one coaching. As an author who has published four books and dozens of short pieces across multiple platforms, I understand what it means to write and how it feels to be edited. I have an MFA in Writing from Pacific University and a Certificate in Editing from the University of Washington.

I love making content look as good as it sounds! With highly developed editing, writing, and communication skills – and an eye for design – I strive to make everything I work on grammatically correct, syntactically strong, and beautifully presented. With over fifteen years’ experience, I am comfortable working in both the corporate and nonprofit worlds. Whether it’s setting the strategic direction for web content, writing and designing copy for a social media campaign, or copyediting a technical book, I achieve excellence through organization and detailed compliance to style guides (Chicago, AP, APA, IEEE). My experience also includes effectively interacting and communicating with artists, writers, developers, scientists, consultants, and leadership. While I am able to maintain a big picture perspective, my sweet spot is definitely in the details.

I have been a teacher of language skills, both English and French, for more than twenty years. I love working with the written word and stories and I have a very strong grasp of grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Also, I am an avid reader of a variety of genres and I understand what makes a story work.
