I began my serious journey into the world of words in 2014, earning an MFA in Creative Writing from Stonecoast in 2016 and a Copyediting Certificate from UCSD in 2017. Since then, I’ve worked consistently as a freelancer for Kensington Publishing and The Stonecoast Review, and also as a mentor/coach for fellow writers.

Dr. Tamira Butler-Likely is the owner and operator of Likely Write Editing. Tamira received a BS in chemistry-biochemistry from Florida A & M University, a PhD in biology and biomedical sciences from Washington University in St. Louis, and completed the Poynter ACES Certificate in Editing.

I edit fiction and creative nonfiction, with a specific focus on developmental editing and line editing. I can help you put the pieces together, be it short story, personal essay, or your Bildungsroman.

With more than 20 years of experience in the publishing industry, I offer a unique and valuable set of editorial skills: writing, editing, proofreading, developmental editing, content development, researching, interviewing, project management, editorial management, and instructional/e-learning design. I have written books, e-books, magazine articles, market reports, advertising/marketing copy, training video scripts, and all types of educational content from chapters/lessons in textbooks to teacher guides and assessments. I am comfortable writing about a wide range of topics from biotechnology and pet care to counterterrorism and early childhood education.

A newspaper journalist since 1980, I moved from the writing side to editing in 1988 and a few years later began freelance copyediting on the side. As a consequence of my four years at the helm of a legal-affairs newspaper, I focused for a time on editing legal texts. Since then I have branched out into memoirs (I’ve led workshops on memoir writing); obituaries (writing and editing — out of my conviction that every life deserves to be chronicled in a style usually reserved for socialites and rock stars); nonfiction and fiction; children’s literature; poetry; and YA fantasy. After the COVID-19 pandemic ended my 20-year stint as a part-time editor for the opinion pages of my local newspaper, I joined theconversation.com as a part-time copyeditor. While I wield my impeccable language skills to cleaning and tightening manuscripts, I remain committed to preserving the writer’s voice. I’m also a bang-up proofreader. I’m comfortably familiar with the AP Stylebook, the Chicago Manual of Style, The Bluebook Uniform System of Citation and The Redbook Manual on Legal Style.
