Writer and copy editor for businesses, non-profit organizations, and authors. I provide developmental editing, proofreading, line editing, and content editing services to help authors and organizations communicate clearly and concisely.

Steve Koppman is an experienced editor and writer with expertise in public policy, politics, economics, business, the telecommunications industry, Jewish history and other areas. He provides English-language developmental editing for Chinese and other not-native-English social scientists. He has worked as an analyst of the communications industry (for Gartner, Heavy Reading and other major research firms) and produced white papers and case studies for communications carriers and equipment vendors on industry and technology subjects relevant to their offerings, produced educational policy briefs for a think tank, contributed corporation profiles to a business almanac and served as assistant publicity director for a university. He has contributed commentary, journalism and satire to a wide variety of major publications including Real Clear Politics, The Nation, The Huffington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, The (San Jose, CA) Mercury News and Newsday, among others, and has four years of daily journalism experience as a reporter, copy and editorial page editor. He has worked as a government analyst at federal, state and local levels and has a master’s in public policy from UC Berkeley. He is an author (Treasury of American-Jewish Folklore, Rowman & Littlefield) and has had short plays produced internationally and had short stories, plays and essays anthologized.

I help individuals and companies create accurate, effective content; I’m known for following style guides, meeting deadlines and enhancing clients’ success. My career began in 1977 at the children’s magazine, Ebony Jr! In 1980 I became a self-employed writer and editor and focused initially on educational publishing. Recent projects focus on content creation, editing and proofreading magazines, blogs, interactive websites, infographics and other content across the online and print spectrum. I’ve enjoyed proofreading deliverables for an award-winning brand agency (2016-2021); copy writing taglines for a major airline (2019); copyediting a book on microfinance in Haiti (Fonkozi, 2017); proofreading test items (FYI Online Learning, 2015, 2013); writing company profiles (Kepos Media and Gale, Cengage reference books, 2009-2013); and copyediting a PowerPoint for pediatric psychiatrist Karen Taylor-Crawford’s keynote (2010). I excel at using the AP, APA, CMOS and Gregg style guides.

I have a BS in Microbiology and a MS in Scientific and Technical Communication.  I have over 16 years of freelance experience working in a wide range of subject matter, including (but not limited to) health and biological sciences, education,  business, history, psychology, and social sciences.  I offer the following services:
