I’m a writer/designer/editor who has transitioned to freelance work from a position in architecture. I’ve written and edited proposals, planning documents, website content, trade show boards and more. Much of the work has also included graphic design to better express, in words and imagery, the stories being told.

I operate Writing Rescue!, a writing-support service helping authors and publishers nationwide. I’m a published author and have been a freelance editorial consultant since 1988. I offer proofreading, copyediting, line editing, indexing, fact-checking, research support, and ghostwriting, as well as manuscript evaluation and author coaching. I specialize in helping first-time authors and self-publishers, and I enjoy both fiction and nonfiction projects, including memoirs and biographies. I have a B.A. in English, an M.A. in English Language and Linguistics, and a law degree, all from the University of Texas. I have taught English, Spanish, and ESL at the high school and community college level, and have also worked as a special education attorney and a Spanish interpreter. My recent projects include copyediting a novel for a major publishing house, proofreading an academic piece for a history professor, and evaluating a literary fiction manuscript for a first-time author. I also copyedited a monthly column that ran in the San Francisco Chronicle from 2018-2019.

My featured service is developmental editing for nonfiction books. I work in several nonfiction genres including professional and scholarly, as well as self-help and other general interest nonfiction. I have edited over 100 books for publication, many of these in mental health-related fields.

I provide substantive editing (content and organization) and copy editing (grammar and wording), with a focus on the biological and social sciences. My specialties include editing academic journal articles and working with non-native English speakers. I am a detail-oriented person with a creative streak and 16 years of experience in editing of all sorts. I aim to make sure that what the writer is trying to say comes through clearly to the intended audience.

I provide development or content editing, copyediting, and proofreading to self-published authors, traditionally published authors, and publishers. I work on most fiction genres, including historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, and thrillers.

Jaida is a full-time freelance editor with a knack for world-building, plot structuring, and character development. She brings over 10 years of editorial experience to the table, from working with New York Times & USA Today bestselling authors while a Literary Agent at New Leaf Literary & Media, to teaching craft courses at universities and writers’ conferences, including SCBWI-NYC, Columbia University, Yale University, Horror Writers Association, The Reader Berlin, and others. While her favorite genres include fantasy, magical realism, science fiction, and literary fiction, she also loves diving into a well-plotted thriller, psychological suspense, or historical fiction manuscript.

I am a longtime freelance copy editor and proofreader, specializing in academic manuscripts and memoir. I’ve worked on scores of books for university presses, self-published authors, nonprofits, and academic writers.
